Kate del Castillo, the most revered actress from Mexico, delivers a tour de force performance in the latest Spanish hit show La Reina del Sur (Queen of the South). The show drew an impressive 8.1 million viewers during its debut week, making it the most successful novella premiere week in Telemundo’s history.
It’s popularity has outshined English language networks ratings as it landed the top spot for the 10pm slot among adults aged between 18-34.
Red Carpet Network (RCN) had the golden chance to interview the Queen of the South during her visit to New York City. As we approached her hotel room to conduct the interview, we were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by the incredibly beautiful Kate herself at the door, dressed in a simple pair of jeans and a shirt, exuding the charm and warmth of a girl next door.
When we discussed the meteoric popularity of La Reina del Sur during the course of the interview, Castillo humbly credited the content and timing of the show for its popularity. The show depicts the journey of a young innocent girl, Teresa Mendoza (played by Castillo), who transforms into one of the most powerful drug traffickers in the world.
It is certainly true that show’s launch coincides with a period of turmoil in the Mexican socio-political climate due to violence associated with narcotics and drug cartels. Mexican drug lord Jacquin Guzman Loera, who is reportedly responsible for the death of thousands of people, is one of the most wanted criminals in the world. However, it is not the only reason for the show’s popularity.
“For some reason this TV series has brought every man’s attention, but I think it is all of it. It’s about drug carteling, it’s about this woman who thinks like a man. So, I think that makes them feel like a part of the show…the ladies are also enjoying it because they see in this powerful lady, who has been through horrible things in her life, and she ends up…standing up again…even with much more power and hope,” gushed del Castillo as she summed up the appeal of the show for us.
Del Castillo is a beautiful and acclaimed actress who does justice to her role. This Queen of the South is also a “Queen of hearts”. She stole our heart with her winsome personality and her girly charm. Given her stardom, her unpretentious and laissez-faire attitude was both surprising and refreshing.
